[시사뉴스 강영진 기자] 교육부와 서울특별시 등 28개 지자체와 교육청, 한국청소년단체협의회 등이 후원하고 국제청소년연합(IYF)이 주최하는 국내 최고 권위의 ‘IYF 영어말하기대회’가 전국 결선을 개최했다.

 

12일(토) 서울시 인재개발원 다산홀에서 개최된 제22회 IYF 영어말하기대회 전국 결선에는 원고 심사와 지역 본선을 통과한 81명의 학생들이 결선에 올랐다.

 

이번 대회에는 중등부와 고등부, 대학부에 1천여 명의 학생들이 참가했다.

 

결선 참가자들은 각 부문별로 ‘나의 꿈’ ‘내가 존경하는 인물’, ‘감동적인 순간’을 비롯해 ‘교류·절제·사고력’, ‘21세기 지구환경문제’, ‘4차 산업혁명을 주도할 인재’ 등 개인과 사회를 아우르는 주제를 유창한 영어로 발표했다.

 

전국 결선에 참가한 학생들에게는 심사를 통해 각 부문별로 대상인 국회 교육위원장상을 비롯해 1‧2‧3등상 등과 함께 총 930만 원의 장학금이 수여됐다.

 

중등부에서는 박현서(서울 대치중3) 군이 ‘Simple Thoughts on Lego(레고에 대한 간단한 생각)’이라는 제목으로 대상인 국회 교육위원장상을 받았고, 고등부에서는 손시경(대전 새소리음악고2) 군이 ‘Little Man, Big Shots(작은 사람, 큰 도전)’을 제목으로 대상(국회 교육위원장상)을 수상했다.

 

대학부 대상(국회 교육위원장상)은 ‘Homeless Is Not Hopeless (집이 없는 것은 희망이 없는 것이 아니다)’이라는 제목의 발표로 장은영(부경대1) 씨가 차지했다.

 

대학부 대상을 차지한 장은영 씨는 “어렸을 때부터 영어에 자신이 없어서 영어말하기대회에 출전하는 것이 큰 부담이었다. 하지만 부담을 넘어 도전했을 때 얻는 자신감과 영어 실력은 그 어떤 상과도 비교할 수 없다”며 “많은 분들의 도움으로 준비할 수 있었고 좋은 결과를 얻어서 기쁘다”고 소감을 밝혔다.

 

고등부 대상을 차지한 손시경 군은 “학교 일정과 겹쳐 영어말하기대회 준비가 쉽지 않았는데 처음 이런 큰 상을 받게 돼서 기쁘다”며 “함께 도와주고 응원해준 가족들과 친구들께 감사한다”고 말했다.

 

중등부에서 대상을 받은 박현서 군은 “최고의 권위를 가지고 있는 IYF 영어말하기대회에 참가하고, 상을 받게 되어 너무 기쁘다. 대회를 준비하며 주제에 대해 깊이 생각할 수 있어서 좋았고, 최고의 실력을 가진 학생들과 경쟁하면서 한층 성장할 수 있어서 감사하다”고 소감을 말했다.

 

국제청소년연합(IYF) 박문택 회장은 열심히 준비하고 참가해준 학생들에게 감사를 전하며, “이번에 영어말하기대회에 참여한 것과 같이 항상 도전하는 마음으로 새롭게 산다면 많은 발전이 있을 것이다”며 축사를 전했다.

 

국제청소년연합(IYF) 설립자 박옥수 목사는 특별 강연에서 “해외를 다니며 많은 사람을 만나면서 언어가 얼마나 중요한지를 알게 된다.

 

2001년 영어말하기대회를 시작해 많은 학생들이 도전하고 있는데, 영어를 통해 한국의 자랑스러운 것들과 지혜가 넓은 세계에 알려지게 되길 바라고, 참가한 모든 학생들이 이 세상을 밝게 이끌어가는 젊은이들이 되길 바란다”고 말했다.

 

한편, 대회를 주최한 국제청소년연합(IYF)은 청소년 교육, 사회봉사, 국제교류 및 문화 활동을 통해 국제적인 감각을 갖춘 지도자 양성과 지구촌 문제의 실질적인 해결을 위해 기독교 정신을 바탕으로 2001년에 설립됐다. 전 세계 95개국에 지부를 활동하고 있는 청소년 단체이자 국제 NGO다.

 

청소년 인성교육 프로그램인 ‘마인드교육’을 비롯해 대학생 해외 봉사 프로그램인 ‘굿뉴스코(Good News Corp)’를 각국에서 진행하고 하고 있다.

At the 22nd IYF English Speaking Contest held at Dasan Hall of the Seoul Human Resources Development Institute on the 12th (Sat), 81 students who passed the plaintiff's screening and regional finals reached the finals.

More than 1,000 students from the middle, high, and university divisions participated in the competition.

 

Participants in the finals presented topics encompassing individuals and society in fluent English, including "My Dream," "The Person I Respect," "Touching Moments," "Exchange, Control, and Thinking," "21st Century Global Environment Issues," and "Human Resources to Lead the Fourth Industrial Revolution."

 

Students who participated in the national finals were awarded a total of 9.3 million won in scholarships, along with the National Assembly's Chairman of Education Award, which is the grand prize for each category, and the 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes.

 

In the middle school, Park Hyun-seo (third year of Daechi Middle School in Seoul) won the Grand Prize of the National Assembly Education Committee under the title "Simple Thoughts on Lego," and in the high school, Son Si-kyung (second year of Daejeon Saesong Music High School) won the Grand Prize under the title "Little Man, Big Shots."

 

Jang Eun-young (Pukyong National University 1) won the grand prize for the university department (National Assembly Education Committee Chairman Award) with a presentation titled "Homeless Is Not Hopeless."

 

Jang Eun-young, who won the grand prize in the university department, said, "Since I was young, I was not confident in English, so it was a big burden to participate in the English speaking contest." However, the confidence and English skills gained when challenging beyond the burden cannot be compared to any other awards, he said. "I was able to prepare with the help of many people and I am happy to get good results."

 

Son Si-kyung, who won the grand prize in the high school, said, "It was not easy to prepare for the English speaking contest due to the school schedule, but I am happy to receive such a big award for the first time."

 

Park Hyun-seo, who won the grand prize in the middle school, said, "I'm so happy to participate in the IYF English Speaking Contest, which has the highest authority, and receive the award. "It was good to think deeply about the topic while preparing for the competition, and I am grateful to be able to grow further by competing with the best students," he said.

 

Park Moon-taek, chairman of the International Youth Federation (IYF), thanked the students for their hard preparation and participation, saying, "There will be a lot of progress if you live a new life with a challenge like participating in the English speaking contest this time."

 

Pastor Park Ok-soo, founder of the International Youth Federation (IYF), said in a special lecture, "As I go abroad and meet many people, I learn how important language is.

 

"Many students are challenging the English Speaking Contest in 2001, and I hope that Korea's proud things and wisdom will be known to the wide world through English, and all participating students will be young people who lead the world brightly," he said.

 

Meanwhile, the International Youth Federation (IYF), which hosted the competition, was established in 2001 based on Christian spirit to foster international leaders through youth education, community service, international exchange, and cultural activities. It is an international NGO and youth organization with branches in 95 countries around the world.

 

In addition to "Mind Education," a youth personality education program, "Good News Corp," an overseas volunteer program for college students, is being held in each country.
